GPRS Locates Private Utility Lines Prior to Drilling and Excavation for Contractor - Charlotte, NC

Recently, Ground Penetrating Radar Systems (GPRS) was requested on to perform a Ground Penetrating Radar (GPR) scan. The purpose of this scan was to locate any existing utilities that may be present in the designated area. As a supplement to GPR, we also used radio detection to help identify live power, communication and other utilities that may have a power signal on them. Once the utilities in the path were identified they were marked directly on the surface so the customer will know where the utilities are. After all the utilities were located on this project, the customer brought in a drilling rig to take some soil samples of the ground. Because GPRS was onsite to help identify any anomalies that may be present, the customer was able to drill on the site without striking and existing utilities that may be present.

We used a GSSI (Geophysical Survey Systems, LLC.) Ground Penetrating Radar Unit with one specific antenna. The antenna used on this project was a 400 MHz antenna along with Radio Detection. This antenna in NC / SC ranges in depths of up to 6’. When scanning with a GPR utility antenna, we take many variables into consideration to make sure that we are collecting the best data possible when running our scans. For this specific application the customer was planning on drilling vertically into the ground around 25’-50’ depending resistance.

With the use of this equipment and the experience of GPR, we were able to help the customer avoid any conflict before drilling or doing any excavation onsite. There are many applications where ground penetrating radar may be applicable. GPRS also specializes in concrete scanning for post tension cables, scanning for conduits in a concrete slab prior to core drilling or just helping identify the structural properties that may be present in an existing concrete wall or slab.

If you feel you may have a project that you could use our services on or may be able to benefit from GPR, you can reach out to me directly with my contact information below.
